Apartheid refers to the implementation and maintenance of legalized racial segregation, in which one racial group is deprived of political, social and other civil rights. These include the right to vote, to a fair trial, to physical safety, and the freedom of religion, movement, speech and assembly.
The term “apartheid”, is an Afrikaans word, derived from the French term “mettre a part”, literally translated to “separating, setting apart.” Apartheid is a policy that was established by the white Afrikaner government in 1948 in South Africa (Coincidentally the same year that the state of Israel came into being).
