What is
Apartheid?

Apartheid refers to the implementation and maintenance of legalised racial segregation, in which one racial group is deprived of political, social and other civil rights. These include the right to vote, the right to a fair trial, to physical safety, and the freedom of religion, movement, speech and assembly.
The term “apartheid”, is an Afrikaans word, derived from the French term “mettre a part”, literally translated to “separating, setting apart.” Apartheid is a policy that was established by the white Afrikaner government in 1948 in South Africa (Coincidentally the same year of The Nakba and the state of Israel came into being). It was an oppressive system of institutionalised racial and ethnic segregation that discriminated against black South Africans. It was a holistic assault on the core of humanity, tearing apart families, communities, and the people’s spirits. Apartheid is the embodiment of injustice, a stain on the conscience of humanity.
