About Course

This course, Introduction to Apartheid: From South Africa to Israel, is a foundational course designed to make a complex subject clear and accessible. Across seven modules, you’ll learn how apartheid is defined under international law, how it operated in South Africa, and how the same patterns of control and segregation are visible in Israel and Palestine today. You’ll hear from human rights organisations, South African voices, and Jewish and Israeli activists who challenge the misuse of language and call for justice.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand how apartheid is defined under international law and why it is recognised as a system of control.
  • Examine how apartheid functioned in South Africa, how it was resisted, and how it eventually fell.
  • Identify the features of apartheid in Israel/Palestine today, and distinguish between religion, political ideology, and state policy.
  • Hear diverse voices from Jewish and Israeli activists to South African leaders, and ordinary people who challenge injustice and model solidarity.
  • Reflect on the cost of speaking truth and discover practical ways individuals everywhere can act for justice.
